who do i need to register a boat with for use on the sea

when i get my cobra i will change the name or more accurately give it a name, who do i call to see if a name has already been used or who do i check with to see what name i am ok to use, not been able to find anything about this. for my other boat when i registed for a licence to use it on the thames they check the name to make sure no two have the same name. does the same thing exist for the sea or can you call it what you like. when i use the other boat on the sea and i get me harbour dues etc noone cares if the name is unique or not

anyone got any guidance on this

cheers

chris

Name does not have to be unique or registered, infact few boat names are unique.

To go abroad you will need it registered (SSR) plenty of info on that on RIBnet found by searching. I once had a link to a site where you could search against boat name in a database of SSR registered vessels and was supprised how many names were duplicated.

To get a radio callsign (which is unique) and licence you need to register, which can be done online (the website excapes me, again search here or someone will post a link i am sure) and there are some names they don't allow - for example you can't call your boat "Dover Coastguard".

HTH

<edit> http://www.rib.net/forum/showthread....6371#post86371 looks usefull, follow top ofcom link for online licence application

Not sure if this is the one you mean, Dan, but it is a database of names: http://www.itu.int/ITU-R/terrestrial/mars/index.asp

LOL!

Alternatively, register here: http://www.mcga.gov.uk/c4mca/mcga-msf4701.pdf

But pay attention to section 7 - "Ship Names" Ships will not be registered if they have undesirable or offensive names....

Oh, and you can go completely electronic with the SSR application here: http://mcanet.mcga.gov.uk/ssr/ssr/
