yamaha 40 hp help sought

I have a yamaha 40 2 stroke that seems to have an odd issue:

The electric start and tilt stopped working.

My 1st thought was that the battery must be the issue, i removed the battery trickle charged it and so it was showing over 12 and still no joy.

I then used jump leads of another boat that was running and the tilt worked but very very slowly, however the electric start will still not engage.

Im now at a real loss and being on holiday would really like to get this resolved. i would welcome any suggestions.

Thanks Mike

High resistance joint somewhere in the power lead from battery to OB?

First action is to try a known good fully charged battery.

Check battery cables & clamps are tight & clean. If you have the type of battery terminal clamps where the wires are held in by screws(NOT recommended) clean the bare wires as corrosion can seriously affect them.

A fully charged battery should show around 12.6 volts.
Rough guide here: http://www.thebatteryshop.co.uk/car-...guide-34-w.asp

ETA If you need to buy a battery Tayna are very good. I've had two from them over the past 12 months. Ordered on-line & delivered within 18 hours - one to where I was on holiday in deepest darkest Cornwall. Both cheaper than I could have bought from my local motor factors at trade!

Could be a corroded earth. Possibly corroded power lead. Could be a knackered battery.

It sounds like the electrical units are working but not getting enough juice.

If the battery has gone flat then even when recharged it would easily show 12v but have no guts. Sometimes you can even see a swelling in the casing side wall that's a big clue.

Jumping from a good battery on a running motor may still have issues if you're keeping a knackered battery in the line or using thin jump cables.

Do you hear anything from the starter at all? Any clicks on turning the key or sounds of engagement?

I think the first test I would do is to swap the old battery for a charged new one just to rule that out, then clean all the power terminals with some sandpaper.

If power is getting through, which it seems to be with the tilt then I'd think you'd hear some kind of click from the starter but maybe not.

But it does sound like it's worth considering corroded contacts.

Another very quick test would be to use your jump cables to bridge the battery to the motor to see if the issue lies with the fixed cables?

Run the battery with battery jump leads straight to the starter motor and you’ll get your answer. You can get breaks in the cables that go from the remote and battery to the engine, because of oxidisation and corroded cables. Again a continuity test with a multimeter will confirm.
