Yet again another small RIB purchase- an SR4!

An update following my agreement to buy Chrisfs150s SR4 in the week. Top guy and agreed to hold the boat, with no deposit based on my word I'd turn up today with some money . Thats how I wish all business could be done !

I'd been speaking with trusty crew ( Simon who some met last week) about a half share of an SR...nearly got Whispers 4.7...so its not all mine and is planned to be cheap simple no frills fun blasting about.

So after a later night than planned last night ( during which I was always looking at my watch thinking 'I've got to be up at 6.30 !' ) . I jumped in the car with tools etc etc for the run to Bodmin. It was a nice easy cruise all the way ! Been a while since I did it ( about 16 years) , but was simple with a great sunrise in my mirrors most of the way .

Any how, made good time which surprised Chris, and I arrived to find him and the boat being wheeled out. A quick once over - again taking him at his word - that 'stuff' works and deal done. Strapped down and hitched up.

Stopped after about five miles for a quick check & bearings cool , but one trye bloody hot , I tried to get air in it , but couldn't get my snazzy pump on the valve - stuff I think ..lets press on. I was aiming for what puddles were left to try and cool it - F1 style, but less weaving .

All home and she really is a nice boat . Seems to be original engine to boat rig ( not so sure about the console) but all dates to 1990. Its not been drilled to death on the transom and never even had a trunk fitted .

So pics show a decent jockey extension and bow seat - which must be fun.

So ideas thoughts so far;

Do I fit a trunk ?

Do I swap the single( extended )seat for a white double I have my eye on for a couple of hundred quid ?

A frame ? or not bother - no electrics on the boat so why bother ? A nice Garmin 276 ( like the other I have will work for all that 'stuff')

Is my hull drain the normal size ? - Seems a little small.

Any thoughts on - keep the bow cover ?, or take it off ? Handy to stash stuff in dry bags when I sort a new petrol tank under the seat.

What are loops for under the bow cover ( I think to hold the dash in from orginal spec?)

Why is one tyre running hot ( maybe pressure - but looks OK and not soft - maybe scrubbing abit ?) Oh and anyone have one odd mudgaurd knocking about ?

Prop pitch - its a SS 15 inch pitch which Chris thought was a little 'revvy' ..what have poeple run/ are running with a a 40 ?

Yes I got the hose stuck up the hull when I was giving it all a hose down ...i'll work out getting it out tomorrow..

Anything else ... ?

RIB revive etc will be ordered shortly ...

Anyone know what colour the leg /skeg was from Yam - may try and blow in the worst of the scratches.

Engine starts and stops easily , purrs away and revs freely but needs a new oil tank cap ( if anyone knows of one )

All in all I am a very happy chap who with some minor fiddiling will have a nice little SR4 for 'wave jumping n shit'

Big thanks to Chris

pics

Oh there is a neat Handheld radioor gps bracket already so the radios can be passed down once I get my spanky new DSC handheld

Another question ..what are the little plastic screws in the transom supports and bow for ? YOu can just see them in the pics ?

Thanks to Chewy for the grey 'aged' hypalon ( will PM you later) - there is one small area where the trailer has rubbed the bow - not leaking or even close to but worth a patch .

I'm sure there is SR stuff I haven't read about I have to know ?

PS no gaffer tape in sight ( yet) , but the trailer may get some

Of course if anyone has white original porn bases sitting about with a screen and dash ....

and in true SR tradition I felt a fitted cover would be needed..or a spare tarp I had in the garage and for good measure I have actually used an old shoe lace to hold in on at the front....

Heat in the tyres is usually a sign of old age!
The old wires in the wall of the tyre letting the tyre flex to much as it rotates causing heat.

Looks great. The hull, tubes and power head look in mint condition.

I would keep it simple, replace consol and respray the leg.

Keep the front cover, part of the character.

Look forward to a trip out.

Agree with Andy, it will probably a time expired tyre. Unlikely that only one of the wheels on a solid axle would be out of true

Little plastic screws cover stainless threaded inserts
Good for Aframe supports and securing an anchor box in the bow
You may find the console is screwed down the same way

Didnt go play today , but started taking bits off..

I'll be swapping the single red console seat for a white double.

Single for sale !

Looked at treadmaster and it was/lifting a couple of places so that had to come out, which actually makes the boat look wider and bigger .

The front and rear jockey extensions have come out - a very nifty bit of work both of them ( included if you want to buy the single) and again make the boat look bigger and ease access to the bow area.

Spray deck is staying - as Steve said it part of the SR4 history and might even keep stuff dry !

Still looking for the Yamaha colour ... and undecided about deck trunk...( I just hate cutting big holes)

You can see in the pic where a light polish has restored the console ( the top bit), the rear seat extension support and the treadmaster removed from the internal 'hull'. I'll probably keep the main dech area - but want to be sure I seal any holes it may be hiding ...

Picked up new console

I think will go well in an SR4. It clearly off something that was in Lymington for a while . Its got a compass and I liked the fact there are some stainless bits to hang on to at the front and back, and it was two minutes from my mums house ! So I got a free dinner and 'points' -

I can also stash a flare box under the back of the rear of the seat.

Its exactly the same width as the current single so I just need to remove a strip of treadmaster down the middle before screwing it in ( hopefully Saturday) if I can get to a place to get some sika etc ...

Question - what number sika do I need ? Of course I want some 'stick' as well as 'seal' .

Single is available for anyone for sure now.

Pete

just need to find someone to fabricate some stainless steel, anyone know of anyone local and reasonable ?

Hey Pete

Lovely Looking SR4 you got there

De-Luxe Version too

Personally, i'd remove the Bow-Doger, you have more space on the boat then, but thats up to personal preferences

I managed to get the Hose stuck in the Flooding hull too

Hi mike.it should all come together well in the next few Weeks. As for ss work I have never needed any bespoke stuff, but I'm sure if you posted a question names will come back. Biffer had a great reputation, but has not been to well, but maybe a little seat extension will be up his street? Failing that am sure a search will uncover those in the know.

221 , though 291 will do the job as well.

Got a pic of the engine? If it's the same colour as my Yam, I've got the Yam colour code for it.

Cheers Nos - off to Force 4 at lunch time to see what they have ( all of 500 yards from my desk ! )

Some pics further back up the thread - but I'll get a detailed one up when I'm home and its light to take the picture. BHG have said they cant find the colour unless they have the serail number - again daylight needed !

Hope its not raining on sat for the console work , but even then I could put Streaker in the rain for a bit .

Oh and of course need to come up with a name ...quite taken with Grey Ghost/ Ghostrider theme...combine them for Greyrider ? ( need to put something on the ofcom site , CG66 etc ! )

Of course Grey Ghost is a very nice scorpion ( migth get it confused ? If only ! and Ghostrider is well and truly taken ! )

Sika sorted, just need the odd 29 screws for the new console. Take the cables off, clean up the wiring , fit new console etc. clean, clean clean and ready to run...
by Sunday should be good to go.
