Zodiac Hurricane 470 deck question

I have a 1989 Hurricane 470. On the starboard side there is a longitudinal compartment which has an opening "deck hatch". The compartment drains into the bilge at the stern. Can anyone tell me the purpose of this feature.

As a matter of fact, when I install a center steering console, it will, of necessity, prevent the hatch from opening. I have thought of installing a flexible fuel tank there but they quoted me $850 for a custom designed tank to fit the space below deck.

I don't think your boat is a "Hurricane" so to speak.

It sounds like what you have is the recreational boat design 1st gen "Pro System 470". During that time period, Zodiac Group had given the molds to Hurricane to produce leisure hulls for the North American market.

It's simply a storage compartment. The boat is designed to be equipped with a jockey seat.
