Start with the engine ideally no smaller than140hp. Suzi are good reliable and not as expensive as the Yamaha.
Clamchowder was looking for similar and has placed an order for a new Redbay in the end.
I was lucky and got a very well looked after 8 years old RC 585 in May with a 140 Suzi with 350 hours. Great rib. Just getting the seats reupholstered and a new name patch in hypalon. Bearing and brakes done on the trailer. Just need a new cover. All for less than £20k.

In fairness all the above are decent Boats...so you won't go too far wrong with any of them
I would say though with a Healthy Budget like yours,to try ALL the boats that fall into your criteria,Take your time....and don't compromise, till you're 100% sure you've found the right/best Boat/engine/power combo AND layout for you and your needs.
You may learn a lot on the way,and could even come to different conclusions about the type of Boating you want to do... It should hopefully be a Fun thing to do anyway!.....So enjoy the process!
And Good Luck!

That's an unusual approach, especially for buying 2nd hand.
I'm not suggesting you ignore the engine, but there's not that much between any of the leading 4 strokes is there? Surely HP depends on the chosen hull (length/beam/weight)? Surely the hull is key, and the layout is very important too?

I am trying to be realistic with this, the only engines I have ruled out are 2 strokes no matter the make.
I'll consider pretty much any rib with my preferred layout........see what comes up over course of winter.
Cheers

I agree the hull is the key but the differences in the designs appears to be subtle between RC, Redbay, Ribquest etc. The one thing that appears to be important is length having had the experience of moving from a 4.8 to a 5.8. Then if you go too big the rib becomes too heavy to tow behind a family car.
Before I bought mine I spoke to several and did a bit of research. Some said they could do with more power ie 90hp on a RC585. My point is getting the right size motor for your needs (weight as well as HP) is as important as getting the hull right when you are spending 20k.
Side by side jockey layout was also a key criteria for me and I would have not accepted anything else. This has made our time on the water that much more enjoyable.

It would be interesting to know what it was about the layout of the RC585 that you didn't like. It's a very similar layout to a lot of the 'big sea' ribs, so if you didn't like it then there may quite a few other things you won't like.
On the subject of trying stuff out: things that look outwardly very similar can feel very different. The Ribquest and Ribcraft we tried felt completely different despite being very similar boats, whereas the Redbay , which has a reputation for being heavy, felt the most lively of the bunch.
We found that getting demos was very difficult but that might be easier if you live on the south coast. It seems that most private buyers won't do a demo without a solid commitment to buy the boat, so trying to hitch a ride with some owners would be time well spent.
