Hi Richard,
My view is the modern engine technology is very reliable, usually as a worst case if a modern four stroke has something going wrong with it, it's ECU will shut itself down into limp home mode before damage is done.
I have not planned to take an aux on my round Ireland trip as if something happened we would be in a flotilla of boats and not too far from a larger boat.
For normal use I rarely worry about it these days and often have done channel crossings etc on one engine.
If you are to take something I think a six may to big for the transome, try a removable bracket and see if it fits either side.
