Optimax 135, starting with a flat battery

Is there any inherent reason why an Optimax cannot be started with jump leads or a powerpack, or is it something we are doing wrong?

It did spin, albeit slowly, a couple of times. But its making a clicking noise mostly.

Sorry to be vague but I am crap at engines etc.

They are very power hungry to start & need to pull a lot of amps to start, I had to replace my batteries when I bought mine!

Remove the old battery. If the plates are shorted internally then it will pull the voltage down. Try again with a known good battery, maybe the one from your car.

They need the full 1000 CCA to open the injectors so the battery you are jumping from will need that plus good cables and connectors.

Good point.

Even with a massive jumper battery you still won't get it to start if there is a short inside the main one. I know - almost melted my HD jumper leads as well.....

Note: Do NOT try to switch the cables back to the original battery once it starts (i.e. while the motor is running.) The alternator circuit does not like being run without a load, and you'll risk blowing the alternator's rectifier components.

Verify the battery is the problem, then replace if needed. Shut the motor down whenever disconnecting batteries.

jky

Update

Thanks All, for the responses.

Update: after putting a battery charger on the battery overnight, the outboard fired up, first go.

Upshot: the Mercury is NOT HAPPY unless its battery is fully charged. We tried with jump leads and a booster pack, with no luck.
