Law on small two strokes?

What's the current legal position on buying new two stroke engines offshore?

My friend has a small RIB with an old, unreliable Yamaha 25hp. There's a company still advertising new Tohatsu two strokes (such as 25/30hp and the 9.8) from Alderney.

When l bought my 9.8 from them in 2012 it still seemed to be OK. The company website is no longer active but if you email them they can still obtain the engines.

The 4 stroke alternative is too heavy, nearly 70kg which is over the maximum transom weight.

Buy one, put it on, say nowt. No-one is EVER going to check.

I got a quote from them for a Tohatsu 18hp and it was just too expensive.

Is the new Yamaha 25hp 4-stroke too heavy at 57kg?

Commercial use only,

Yamaha have pulled out of the market, we bought a 25 2-stroke earlier this year and were told that they were pulling the plug on them due to increasing regulation.

Great engine ;o)

And in any case it is the seller who is breaking any rules not the buyer (of course if you subsequently sell it then that could fall to you - but as a one off second hand seller you will be even less interesting to bother with). I'm told that any dealer can supply you if you have company headed paper and a Vat number.

Very easy to buy in Europe where they don't really seem to care. Plus, isn't Alderney outside of the EU anyway which is where this law applies?? (Also means you'll get hit with VAT etc when you import it unless you pop over there and bring it back in a suitcase!)

Any recomendations of EU dealers willing to ship to UK?

Mainbrayce in Alderney sell the Tohatsu range.

You can email them or try the phone, there no longer seems to be a website. As mentioned above you have to pay VAT unless you can collect the engine.
They quoted £2200+VAT for the Tohatsu 25hp.

Why not hunt for a mint used one? Then no regulations to deal with ;)
