rib insurance

Hi, can anyone please recommend a good insurance company for a rib.

Thank you.

Matt 26 April 2024 22:05

Both my boats are insured with Porthcawl Insurance

helphelp 26 April 2024 23:05

thanks for the reply, are they competitive

There is no way of judging an insurance company until you have to make a claim from them and judge their reaction in terms of customer service plus payment amount and timing.

Tolerate have always appeared OK for me, but I've never claimed.

Craftinsure.com are very competitive & easy to set up online. I've made a couple of claims over 20 years for 2 hard boats & they were very easy to deal with & fair. My pal had a partial sinking of his yacht & same result, very fair in settling. Another pal wrote off his rib & again they settled easily & fairly. Your dealing with a real person who handles your claim & you can ring & discuss with the person making the decisions. As others have said an insurance company only shows how good they are when you need to claim & my experience & several pals experience has been positive with craftinsure.com.
Highly recommend 👍

Sib not rib……but another with craftinsure.

Whoever you go with just insure you check the small print;)

For example I take a photograph of the outboard lock on the sib on site if leaving on the water overnight. Along with a padlocked high security motorbike chain on another occasion.

Won’t stop a determined thief but evidence you’ve took some reasonable theft precautions for insurance claims.

Not sure what happened there:

Towergate

I've just cancelled a Craftinsure policy because mine didn't allow me to leave the boat afloat at night. initially I thought I could live with it, but I changed my mind. This clause depends on boat size and possibly your location.

Cheers for the heads up.....
I didn't follow my own advice to the op on renewal this year ( reading the small print).....so will double check just in case mines changed.

I noticed the same clause last year, had a word with them and they have amended my policy to include leaving overnight unattended on tidal and non tidal moorings. Obviously it was at a cost to think it's an extra £20.

They are very accommodating if you ring & ask the question, my hard boat policy didnt cover being kept on a swing mooring but I bought a mooring a few years ago & wanted to move from a marina, I rang them & the added cover to my policy for an extra charge, something ridiculous like 40 or 50 quid a year extra for £100k cover.
I've known other folk ask for extra cover not in their basic policy & they added what was required no problem.

Been with Craftinsure for about 12yrs now. Never had to claim but like Ken and others found them flexible and helpful re tailoring your policy.

Thanks for all the replies and info !

Insure4boats...my third year with them and easy to sort online 5m Rib Inc water Skiing, craft in transit, £280 for the year. It has to be said though that I haven't made a claim.

+1 for Porthcawl, I've found them to be competitive on premiums and friendly to deal with - I've never had to make a claim (touch wood) though.
Get some quotes from a range.
Let us know who you go for and why

I have my rib insured with porthcawl . No problems so far. It is always good to speak to a friendly person on the phone when renewing my cover. Not to mention the reduced premium amount I paid this year. Keep it up porthcawl.

Interesting headsup for those of us still with CraftInsure: they've been taken over by someone else by the looks of it and some of the definitions have changed in significant ways.

Old wording:
We will not cover "Loss or damage whilst your boat is left afloat unattended, unless on non-tidal waters or within a marina, or if at recognised sheltered mooring locations for periods exceeding 24 hours."

New wording:
"Assumptions:
The boat will not be left unattended unless in a marina or on inland non-tidal waters."
The definition of a "Marina" is: "A secure and sheltered mooring complex providing controlled access to berths and pontoons. Excluding facilities with floating or temporary breakwaters" which rules out a lot of places round us (Lochaline and Tobermory spring to mind).

I've rung them up and they've added an endorsement but at a cost of 21% hike in premium.

Off to make a coffee in preparation for a bit of shopping around. :ermm:

TBH I only ever do 3rd Party anyway.

Fenlander 13 March 2025 11:11

A good heads up thanks. I'll look at my policy more carefully than usual when it renews nearer the summer.

Just out of curiosity, how much are you paying for what level of cover (ish).
This pops up regularly on Ribnet, but without any meaningful numbers it's impossible to compare the level of cover/premium.
